A Personal Note

Why I Wrote This Book

For much of my life, parenting was something I was simply doing. Raising two sons, teaching other people’s children, watching young minds unfold at home and in the classroom. It was only later, after relatives and friends began asking me the same questions again and again about how I had raised Ashish and Aman, that I realised what I had been quietly learning for over four decades.

Parenting, to me, has never been about producing high achievers. It has been about nurturing human beings. Yes, my sons went to IIT Delhi and built successful careers. But what makes me proud is not their degrees. It is that they are respectful, grounded, and kind. That, I believe, is what every parent is truly trying to build, even when the world is pulling them toward marks and rankings and comparisons.

I wrote this book for the parent who feels that tug. For the mother who is exhausted, the father who is unsure, the family that loves deeply but struggles to know when to hold on and when to let go. The wisdom in these pages is not mine alone. It is the quiet inheritance of generations of mothers, teachers, and elders who shaped me.

Take what resonates. Leave what does not. And trust yourself.

Embarking on Parenthood

From the Introduction

Becoming a parent is an extraordinary blessing, endowing you with the singular experience of nurturing someone who bears your resemblance. It empowers you to share the wisdom and knowledge amassed over a lifetime, as if you were crafting their journey with your own life experiences.

I have been fortunate to embrace the role of a mother to two wonderful sons. Hailing from a modest background and facing numerous challenges, I have had the privilege of guiding them through various stages of growth and learning. Today, they stand as well-rounded and highly successful individuals. They excelled in their education, both earning admission to IIT Delhi and eventually becoming senior executives in the United States. However, what fills me with the greatest pride is our collective dedication to nurturing their inner character and fostering respect for others. Ultimately, this aspect of their upbringing has brought us all more satisfaction than any external achievements ever could.

Consequently, I am frequently asked by relatives, friends, and members of our community about my parenting approach and the steps I took to mould them in this distinctive manner. After countless discussions and experiences shared, I have decided to compile my learnings and thoughts into writing. Dear parents, what you hold in your hands today is the culmination of over 40 years of hard-earned wisdom, forged through numerous challenges, lessons, and life-altering events.

The bond with your child is a one-of-a-kind relationship, unlike anything you have ever experienced, and it can blossom into something very deep and beautiful over the years. Their happiness brings you immense joy, and you share in their pain with tears in your eyes. This profound connection fills you with a special sense of satisfaction, making you feel whole and content. Throughout your life, children can become your constant source of inspiration.

Witnessing your child’s growth and development is immensely satisfying. You eagerly observe every step they take, cherishing each milestone in their journey. Your desire to support their growth drives you to enhance your skills continually, so you can play a significant role in nurturing their development.

Parents should focus on four key areas of child growth: physical development, by observing and supporting changes at each stage. Cognitive growth, by fostering learning, memory, and problem-solving skills. Emotional well-being, by cultivating balance and resilience. And language proficiency, by emphasising effective communication.

In the subsequent chapters of this book, we will delve into these topics and more, offering practical insights, tips, and ideas to enrich your role as a parent.

Four excerpts to read right now

Believe in Your Child From the chapter Believe in Your Child

Believing in your child is akin to nurturing a plant. With the right dose of belief, like water, and support, like sunlight, your child will grow resilient, blossom beautifully, and weather life’s challenges. It is the most precious gift you can bestow upon them.

Children often perceive themselves through the lens of their parents. When you believe in them, it instills a sense of self-worth. They think, “If my parents have faith in my abilities, then I must be capable.”

Before you set any expectations for your child, demonstrate your complete trust in them. When you do this, they are less likely to let you down. Success and failure are two sides of the same coin. This should not lead you to lose faith in your child. Instead, help them understand what might have gone wrong. Sometimes, people learn best through trial and error.
